Know your tooth stain category...
To begin, one must understand the types of tooth stains. Did you know that stains are classified in two different categories? Check out this excerpt from a news article (http://www.insidehalton.com/shopping-story/4519780-creating-the-perfect-smile-with-teeth-whitening/) on tooth stains:
There are two types of teeth staining: surface and internal. Surface stains can be removed by abrasive toothpastes or professional polishing, however, internal stains should be oxidized away chemically with stabilized peroxides. Many turn to teeth whitening procedures to help solve the problem of discolouration. While some might be tempted to walk into their local pharmacy or big box store to purchase an at-home kit, most dental experts will agree, it is best to visit a dental professional for a treatment of this sort. The biggest reason being is that over-the-counter whitening products are not customized to meet an individual’s needs.
It is not just for adults...
Tooth whitening is also becoming more popular with kids. Check out this clip featuring a cosmetic dentist in Georgia. Many students have gone through the process of braces, but have never had their teeth whitened. "After braces, teeth can be straight without the wow factor. Our simple, inexpensive, professional strength teeth whitening gives teeth the wow factor," says Dr. Kirk Kimmerling DDS. So how does tooth whitening work?
This next clip comes from Dr. Rick Carter, a dentist that has been practicing for over 35 years and is located in Minneapolis.
Carter says when dentists first started whitening teeth they used lights. But it wasn’t long before they realized peroxide could whiten teeth and keep them white much longer. Coffee, tea and tobacco can yellow your teeth, and peroxide works to remove those yellow molecules. “The peroxides can break that down very easily. So within a day or two your teeth are looking very white,” Carter said. Peroxide is found in a new product called “GO” which Carter uses. It’s basically a mouth guard with whitening gel. One point that I'd like to make is to make sure that you consult with your dentist. There is a possibility that you can damage your teeth if you try to over do it when it comes to tooth whitening. You could inadvertently make your teeth much more sensitive than they should be. And in some extreme cases, you could actually case your teeth to discolor and become darker or have a blueish tint.
